Special Needs Education (Including Gifted and Talented Children)
There is a whole-school policy for children with ‘special needs’ in which an environment of acceptance and encouragement is developed; an environment in which every child is valued for his or her own worth and for the contribution which he or she is able to give to the school community.
Many children during their school life will have a special need at some time. These are detected and dealt with within the class situation initially or if necessary will be referred to relevant outside agencies, such as Literary Support Unit, for extra help and advice. The National SEN Code of Practice is fully operational in the school.
The Governors wish to make it clear that no child who fulfils the admission criteria will be denied a place at St Mary Magdalen’s School because they have ‘special needs’ if the school is able to provide a suitable education for that child.
Because of the geography of the school, access for the physical disabled is extremely difficult at present.
Children of above average ability are catered for by extension activities within the classroom. We are in the process of setting up master classes for ICT, English and Mathematics. We encourage gifted children to take part in able pupil programmes that are being run either at our school or at other schools within the LEA; these might include specialised classes in Art, Science, PE, or Technology.

Curriculum Enrichment
We firmly believe that ‘everyone is good at something’. We encourage our children to strive to do their best, exploring the different gifts and talents with which they have been blessed.
We are able to offer a number of after school clubs which all children are entitled to attend including
- Football
- Netball
- Golf
- Gymnastics
- Karate
- Art
- Lego
- Disney
- Sewing
- Craft
Special provision will be made for children if necessary.
We also offer enrichment activities throughout the school year.
Peripatetic teachers visit the school to offer specialist music tuition.
